This federal university (also known as UNIRIO) was founded in 1979. There are several campuses in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The Centro de Letras e Artes offers programs in theatre, literature and music. The music department is known as the Instituto Villa-Lobos, formerly known as the National Conservatory of Orpheonic Singing, founded by Villa-Lobos in 1942. It organises weekly concerts in its Sala Villa-Lobos. Language of instruction is Portuguese.
There is an extension program offering music instruction to young children and interested members of the local community.
